The Devil's Arithmetic is a great book so far and it is very good book with Hannaleh and her mysterious transportation back in time to the late 1930's and early 1940's. Hannaleh was at a Jewish party called a Passover Seder when a mysterious force moves her into the German empire and is only called by her Hebrew name. All in all the book is interesting so far.
Passover- a Jewish holiday.
yahrzeit- anniversary of the death of a parent or other.
Haggadah- traditional Jewish literature.
cordwood- wood piled or sold in cords.
steerage- section of passenger ship for passengers paying the lowest fairs.

So far Hannaleh is still thinking that her mysterious transportation back in time is a dream. Hannaleh is meeting new people in this time period and is making friends slowly. She has met with a butcher and the people that are taking care of her and two young boys. She is starting to forget what life was like back in New Rochester
and what her parents where like.
rousing- make or become active.
beanies- small brimless cap.
mortified- to embarrass greatly.
matzoh- unleavened bread eaten at the passover.
kosher- ritually fit for use.

Hannaleh is having a difficult time convincing the other people that are with her that the Nazis are going to kill them. She still thinks this is a dream and still trying to get herself to wake up but it is not working out for her. She has made a few friends though and they had fun before the Nazis came.
wry- having a bent or twisted condition.
cascaded- to fall as if in a cascade
conspiratorial- relating to a conspiracy.
mishigaas-craziness.
specialist- enlisted person in the army.

Hannaleh has been taken with the rest of her friends and everybody else in the village have been taken to a train station where they were searched for anything of value. They were then herded into a small cattle cart and sent on their way.
sabbath- a day of rest and worship.
vividly- strong or clear impression.
shadchan- marriage broker.
uproariously- extremely funny.
badchan- joker.

Hannaleh is becoming more and more upset with everybody because they will not believe her about the Nazis despite what has happened so far. Hannaleh is being ordered around by the Nazis and the other inmates. She doesn't know what to do and a 4 year old girl died next to Hannaleh and she blames herself for the little girls death. She now is forced to memorize the dents and nicks in the bowl she was given if she wants to live.

Hannaleh has lost almost all of her memories about her true home and family. Dr. Mengele(Angle of Auschwitz) is being kind to her and her friends. What Hannaleh doesn't understand is why is he being so kind and gentle to them. She also finds out why the 3 fingered woman has only 3 fingers. It is punishment for allowing the Jews to get out of control on 2 occasions. Now Dr. Mengele is coming to the concentration camp every other day and this is beginning to worry Hannaleh about what he may be planning.

crazed- to have became insane.
blokova- a prisoner in charge of the other prisoners in a concentration camp.
shmattes- rags.
pervasive- having the quality to pervade or permeate.

Hannaleh is now part of a plot to escape but the plot fails and Hannaleh is almost caught. Gitl luckily managed to throw off suspicion and the shoes Hannaleh dropped were the blokovas shoes. Hannaleh had to watch one of her friends die. Hannaleh is feeling really bad because she blames herself for everything that has happened to Gitl, herself, and everyone.
cobbler- a person that mends shoes for a living.
render- to cause or become.
klezmer- traditional eastern European Jewish music.
drek- trash.
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheynu- "Hear O Israel, the Lord is Our God."

Hannaleh is almost sent out to the gate but there were four little girls including Hannaleh. The ones that are picked are Esther Shifre Rivka. Hannaleh is devastated by this act of a new guard.

Hannaleh has been transported back to her own time now and is back at the Passover celebration and realizes that her Aunt Eva is actually Rivka and her Grandpa Will was a sonderkommando.

Gitl and a few others survived the camps and later on they created an adoption agency and are still alive.

Anne has gone into hiding now. She has to deal with an overprotective mother, two selfish people that are married, a non-responsive boy, a quiet sister, and a clean/germ freak.

Anne is having frequent nightmares about being captured and taken away. Dussel can't get any sleep because of Annes nightmares, everyone else is afraid that her nightmares are going to give away their hiding place. Anne is getting more and more frustrated with her mother and her sister because everyone is comparing her to her sister, Margot, and Anne is getting tired of being compared to her sister.
